It seems like everyone has boxes of old photographs that sit in a closet and are susceptible to things like moisture damage and general deterioration due to age. Some photos may appear beyond repair, but that's not always the case given the talents of a skilled graphics artist. Some of the most horrifically damaged prints can be brought back to life with professional tender loving care and skill. Improving Clarity & Image Definition

This image required an improvement to the overall contrast and tone, enhancing the image definition in the lighter areas. Work was done on each person. Finally, the background was darkened to give more contrast to the men.

This fix includes removing apparent dust spots, scratches and marks on the edges, plus improving overall contrast.

Recreating a Damaged Photo

Many times photos are ripped or torn, requiring extensive restoration to bring them back to their original splendor.

The puzzle pieces in this problem photo were pieced together on a sheet of paper, and then scanned. The ripped and torn edges, along with the timeworn scratches and dust were removed. When the picture was whole again, the tone and contrast were corrected. Finally, a duo-tone was added to give it that old patina.

Brightening & Enhancing Contrast

Sometimes you want a copy of an image from an original, old slide. Enhancements can be made to brighten the image, improve the coloring and enhance the overall contrast. Notice that the ground has received a hint of green to make it softer and more appealing.

This poor quality slide did not fair well over the years. It started out being dull and washed out, and got lots of scratch and dust marks over the years. If the slides are not handled properly, this can be a real challenge.

Merging the Best of Multiple Photos

This is an example of merging two photos to get the best of both views. In one case, there were no people, and in the other case, the head was missing on the sculpture. To get everyone in the picture, along with the statue, the person taking the picture would have to be so far back that nobody would be recognizable. A new background was added, along with some trees for this fabulous, and natural looking group shot.

Antiquing, Montages & Special Effects

In order to create greater interest with this pedigree tree and feature it as a keepsake, the whole image was antiqued. Then, the hand written words were removed and replaced with an appropriate font to match the rest of the document. Photo images of her as a puppy and as an adult were added. (to the right)
